How does HP make sure you’ll always have ink?

Your printer uses the Internet to let us know when to send more ink. Here’s how you can get all the ink you need, delivered to your door.

  1. Purchase an eligible printer. 3
  2. Sign up for a plan based on the number of pages you print.
Ink, shipping, and cartridge recycling are included.
No annual fee—Change or cancel plans online anytime.5
  3. We’ll mail special HP Instant Ink cartridges to you.
Our cartridges have more ink than XL cartridges, so you'll replace them less often.
  4. Billing and service start after you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridge.
  5. Your printer tells HP when to send more ink.
Your service is not based on how many cartridges you use, so print as many high quality photos as you like.
  • You’ll get ink before you need it.

We’ll recycle too!

We will provide postage-paid shipping materials to return used cartridges. HP Planet Partners will recycle them as part of your service.

An Internet connection

Your printer will need a connection to the Internet.

Credit card

A credit or debit card is needed for your monthly payments.

Connect your printer to your network with Internet access

If you are setting up your printer for the first time, follow the setup instructions that came with your printer. Your printer software will guide you through setting up your printer on your network.

Wireless connection

If you have already setup your printer, make sure it is connected to your wireless network. When your printer is connected the light next to the printer’s wireless icon will be on.

If your printer is not connected to your network, use the Wireless Setup Wizard on your printer. On most printers you can press the Wireless button to access your printers’ wireless network settings.

For more help with setting up or troubleshooting your HP printer connection to a wireless network, go to http://www.hp.com/global/us/en/wireless.

Wired connection

If your printer has an Ethernet port, you can connect an Ethernet cable between your printer and your router to create a wired connection.

You may continue to print and scan over a USB connection to your printer. However, your printer will also need to be directly connected to the Internet.

Once your printer and computer are connected to the same network you can print and scan with or without the USB cable.

Frequently Asked Questions

HP Instant Ink Service

  • When you sign up for an HP Instant Ink plan, you pay a monthly fee to print a defined number of pages per month. The plans are based on the number of pages that you print, not on how many ink cartridges you use. Your monthly fee pays for ink, shipping, and recycling. If you do not print all of your plan pages in a month, you can roll over up to the number of pages per month in your plan. If you print more pages, there is an additional charge but you are still paying the same price per page as your base plan. A printed page counts the same whether it’s black and white, a color document, or a photo. There are three plans:

Monthly fee Pages per month Rollover pages total Additional pages
$2.99 50 Up to 50 Each additional set of 15 pages for just $1.00
$4.99 100 Up to 100 Each additional set of 20 pages for just $1.00
$9.99 300 Up to 300 Each additional set of 25 pages for just $1.00

There is no annual fee and you can cancel or change plans anytime without penalty.5 As part of the service, HP will send you HP Instant Ink replacement cartridges and postage-paid recycling envelopes, before you run out of ink, at no additional cost.2 Your billing month starts when you insert an HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer.

Your printer tells us that you’re low on ink, so we will know when to send you more. You will always have ink when you need it.2 HP Instant Ink cartridges can only be used in the printer that you have enrolled. Used HP Instant Ink cartridges must be returned in the postage-paid recycling envelopes provided by HP. Returned cartridges will be recycled by HP Planet Partners.

  • No, you will only get cartridges when your printer tells us you need them. HP Instant Ink cartridges are extra high capacity, and they contain months-worth of ink depending on your usage. You can print as much as you want as long as you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink.

  • Yes, you can print full color photos, color documents, or high-quality black and white pages. Each page costs the same. Your monthly fee is based on the number of pages you print, not on the amount of ink you use. You never have to worry again about printing in black and white to avoid using your color ink cartridges.

  • No. You do not need an enrollment key to sign up for HP Instant Ink. If you did purchase an enrollment card at a retail store, be sure to enter the code when prompted during sign up. Otherwise you can simply select your desired plan and continue with your enrollment.

  • Your billing cycle of approximately 30 days starts when you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer. You will be billed at the end of your billing cycle for your monthly fee and any additional pages you printed. However, if you are eligible for promotions, trials, and/or offers, billing and charges are based on the rules of the promotion applied.

If you purchased an enrollment card in a retail store, your credit card will not be charged for the monthly fee that is included with the enrollment card. Your enrollment card fee does not include any additional pages that you print beyond the page amount in your plan.

  • Your credit card is charged approximately 30 days after the day you insert your first HP Instant Ink cartridge in your enrolled printer. You are billed at the end of your billing cycle for the previous 30 days of service. You will be billed for your monthly plan fee, plus any additional pages you printed during your billing cycle.

Since your monthly plan fee is the same every month, we will not send you a bill prior to charging your monthly fee, unless you print additional pages. When you print additional pages during your billing cycle, we will send you an email at the end of your billing cycle, listing your monthly fee and the charges for any additional sets of pages you printed. Remember to keep your printer connected to the Internet, so you can get notifications about your HP Instant Ink account.

You can also find your complete billing history by signing in at hpinstantink.com. To view your billing history, expand the Activity section, and then click on Billing.

NOTE: If you are eligible for promotions, trials, and/or offers, billing and charges are based on the rules of the promotion that you have applied. If you signed up using a prepaid card, any monthly charges will be deducted from your prepaid balance rather than a credit card on file, as long as there is sufficient balance.

  • HP will send you replacement cartridges before you run out of ink. When your enrolled printer is connected to the Internet, your printer automatically orders ink for you because it knows when you are low on ink.1 Cartridges are sent using standard shipping, so they might take up to 10 days to arrive, however, your printer will take shipping time and regular ink usage into account when it orders your ink. Customers with high volume print needs may call Support.

1Your printer orders ink when your cartridges have enough ink to print twice the number of average pages included in your monthly plan. Learn more about how HP measures page yields

  • If you do not use all your plan pages in a month, the unused pages will be kept in your account as rollover pages. Your rollover pages are available as long as you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink. You can continue to roll over up to the number of pages in your monthly plan (for example, you can roll over up to 50 pages if you are enrolled in a 50 page plan). If you have printed all of the pages in your plan, and you have used all of your rollover pages, you can still print additional pages and save.

Additional pages are available in sets of 15, 20 and 25 pages, depending on your plan, for only a $1.00, so you are still paying the same price per page as your monthly plan. As long as your printer is connected to the Internet, we will send you an email to remind you when you are near printing all of the pages in your plan. You can easily change your monthly plan whenever you want by signing in at hpinstantink.com. Expand the My Plan section and click Edit, next to HP Instant Ink Plan. Since you can choose to make a plan upgrade effective immediately and retroactively apply to the current billing cycle, you can always upgrade your plan rather than purchasing additional pages.

  • You can find out how many pages you have printed, how many rollover pages are available, and how many additional pages you have purchased by signing in at hpinstantink.com.

  • HP Instant Ink is currently available in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and France. We’re planning on expanding, so keep checking back for updates on when HP Instant Ink will be available in other countries.
